Growing Pasifika Language Weeks
Each year Te Papa’s Public Programmes team delivers 10 Pasifika language weeks, embracing and sharing Pacific cultures and languages with Te Papa’s visitors, and engaging with the diverse pacific community – including Solomon Islands, Kiribati, Cook Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Fiji, Niue, Tokelau, Rotuma, and Samoa.
Every Pasifika language week involves working with many stakeholder groups, community groups, and practitioners, to amplify their voices and the programmes they are already undertaking as well as producing public programmes, digital content and publications from Te Papa.
In line with Te Papa Foundation’s strategy, to support Te Papa under our culture pillar, the Foundation is eager to support Te Papa’s public programmes team with their work on Pasifika language weeks through increasing outreach and engagement.
Across the Pasifika language weeks held in 2021, 780 people attended live events, more than 4,500 people tuned in to online digital events, and there were at least 10,000 downloads of the digital activity workbooks; showing just how important these resources are to the wider community in learning about the cultures and languages of a wide variety of Pacific nations. Through increasing the support available, public programming for Te Papa’s Pasifika language weeks can grow and improve in quality, and more digital resources and publications for ongoing use by Pasifika communities can be created.
